Details

We stayed for four nights at the Buffalo KOA Journey in mid August of 2017, using it as a base within easy driving distance of a viewing area for the total solar eclipse of August 21. This is a basic, clean, nicely landscaped and well maintained campground with easy access from Interstates I-25 and I-90. The campground staff was friendly and helpful during our stay. The campground has a lovely fishing stream flowing through the back of the property.

Cost

We generally find that KOAs are pricey for our tastes, but we are willing to pay for the convenience for short stays or if there are not better alternatives. For four nights at a 50 amp full hookup pull-thru site, we paid about $50 per night, including tax and our KOA Value Kard Rewards Discount. There were no fees for pets or an extra vehicle.

Amenities On Site or Nearby

The campground offers the basic amenities expected from a KOA, including full and partial hookup sites, dry tent sites, rental cabins, RV dump station, propane, restrooms and showers, game room, laundry room, playground, horseshoes, dog run, and swimming pool. The park has a small general store with basic groceries, household goods, camping supplies, souvenirs and tourist info for the local area. Grocery stores, restaurants, automotive and some RV services are nearby in Buffalo. A larger choice of services and shopping are available in Sheridan, WY (37 miles), Casper, WY (113 miles), or Rapid City, SD (209 miles).

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 4/5

The campground is easily accessible from Interstates I-25 and I-90. Lanes in the park are well-maintained gravel. The park has both pull-thru and back-in sites and can accommodate large rigs. The campground facilities have provisions for Universal access.

Facilities/Amenities – 4/5

The campground offers the basic amenities expected from a KOA, including full and partial hookup sites, dry tent sites, rental cabins, RV dump station, propane, restrooms and showers, game room, laundry room, playground, horseshoes, dog run, and swimming pool. Facilities are clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and helpful. You may fish in the stream at the back of the campground.

Site quality – 4/5

Sites have full or partial hookups with 50/30/20 amp electric, cable TV and a picnic table. Sites are gravel with grassy median, picnic table and fire ring. Sites are wide enough to accommodate slide-outs and awnings, but otherwise have little separation between sites. Most sites have shade trees. Some premium sites have concrete slab patios.

Scenic Value – 3/5

The campground is nicely landscaped and has a lovely stream flowing past the tent sites at the back of the park. The campground is in a semi-rural area of fields and light development with glimpses of the Bighorn Mountains in the distance.

Location/Isolation – 3/5

The campground is on the outskirts of Buffalo near Interstates I-25 and I-90, but still feels rather isolated and quiet due to the mature landscaping throughout the park and little traffic noise from the frontage road. Campsites near the back of the park have the peaceful sounds of the flowing stream.

Paws Friendliness – 4/5

The campground is pet friendly and has a large enclosed pet run with cleanup bags. The campground is large enough for a decent walk with your pet. The flowing stream offers a cooling splash for your pet.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, the Buffalo KOA Journey campground is a convenient and peaceful stop for a few nights when passing through the area. We enjoyed our stay here.

Additional info

Internet access

We received a moderate 4G Verizon signal at this campground. We did not need to deploy our cellular antenna booster to improve MiFi hot spot internet access. The campground provided free WiFi, but we did not use this during our stay.

Water Quality

The water at this campground tested hard – we added our water softener to the water filtration stack.
