From Glacier View we made our way to Valdez, Alaska. Our route took us along the Glenn and Richardson Highways through spectacularly wild and beautiful country. All around were vistas of jagged mountain ranges or forested, boggy taiga, Patches of roadside flowers added bright splashes of color. Skies were overcast and we ran into occasional showers and heavy rain along the drive.

From Homer we made our way to Seward, Alaska, for a week-long stay. The day we left for Seward started as a glorious sunny day for travel along the Kenai Peninsula. As we drove the Sterling Highway along the coast we had rare clear views of the majestic Illiamna and Mt. Redoubt volcanoes across the Cook Inlet. Further along we enjoyed views of the rushing Kenai/Russian River, as well as the picturesque Kenai, Tern and Upper/Lower Trail lakes. Our course followed glacier-carved valleys between rugged mountains. As we turned on the Seward Highway towards the coast we ran into increasingly heavy overcast and rain.

DescriptionThe Chicken Gold Camp and Outpost, also known as Chicken RV Park and Campground, is a remote and rustic campground set amidst low forested mountains at the “Top of the World”. The park features displays of antique mining equipment, a historical gold dredge, facilities for gold panning and recreational mining, and a whimsical giant metal chicken. The park is an interesting place to stop while travelling the Taylor Highway / Top of the World Highway route or as a base to further explore the area.
The Valdez KOA is a nicely forested campground with magnificent views of snow-mantled and glacier-encrusted mountain peaks on all sides. A stream filled with salmon, in season, flows through the park and wildlife sightings are common, including bears and bald eagles. The campground has the feel of a deep woods frontier outpost. This KOA is conveniently located about 6 miles outside of town and makes for a great base to explore Valdez and the surrounding area.
DescriptionGrand View Cafe and RV Park is a nice small campground just off the scenic Glenn Highway. Located at the base of Sheep Mountain Dall Sheep Reserve between the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountain Ranges, the park has spectacular views of snowy mountains and deep forested valleys. This is a great park to stop at while traveling between Anchorage and Tok or Valdez, or as a base while exploring the area around Glacier View.
